Nigeria: 27 dead after Boko Haram attacks on Nigerian villages

Boko Haram extremists killed at least 27 people by shooting them and slitting their throats as they attacked several villages in northern Nigeria’s Borno state in the past week, residents said.

Such deadly attacks in recent months have pressured Nigeria’s government to increase its efforts against a homegrown Islamic extremist group it last year declared to be “crushed.”

South Sudan: SPLA controls Pagak but fighting with SPLA-IO continue in surrounding areas

A senior United Nations peacekeeping official Thursday told the UN Security Council that the government forces have controlled the rebel headquarters near the border with Ethiopia.

The statements put an end to the conflicting reports from the two warring sides in South Sudan as they both claim the control of Pagak since the 7th August when the government forces attacked the rebel stronghold of the border town.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, El Ghassim Wane, said the security situation in the Upper Nile region remains a source of “serious concern”.

Burma-Myanmar: 71 dead in Rohingya militants attack on police stations and army base

At least 71 people were killed Friday in Myanmar’s strife-torn Rakhine State when Rohingya Muslim insurgents launched simultaneous predawn attacks on 30 security outposts, police stations and an army base, according to the government’s latest update.

It earlier said clashes broke out in Maungdaw district of northern Rakhine around 1 a.m. when “extremist Bengali terrorists” attacked security outposts and police stations in 24 separate locations in the area, which is mostly populated by minority Rohingya Muslims.

Iraq: Peshmerga ward off Islamic State (IS) militants massive attack south of Kirkuk

Kurdish Peshmerga forces repelled overnight Thursday a massive attack by Islamic State (IS) militants in souther Kirkuk areas, officials confirmed.

After hours of fierce fire exchange, the offensive was defeated with several jihadists killed or injured, Peshmerga commander Mohammed Qader told BasNews.

Yemen: Saudi-led air strikes hit hotel killing 60 people including civilians and rebels

Saudi-led coalition air strikes near the Yemeni capital of Sanaa have killed an estimated 60 people and injured 13 after hitting a hotel, officials in the country have said.

Dozens of Shia Houthi rebels as well as civilians were among the dead, officials told the AP on Wednesday on condition of anonymity.
