Mali: Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) jihadists return to village where a raid killed 20 soldiers

Jihadists on Wednesday regained control of a village in central Mali, locals said, returning to the site of a recent attack that killed 20 members of the security forces.

The Malian army, which had retaken control of Soloko, had “fallen back” to the neighbouring area of Diabaly and jihadists had returned to the village, a local teacher told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Afghanistan: Taliban kill at least 29 members of the Afghan security forces in renewed clashes

At least 29 members of the Afghan security forces have been killed in Taliban attacks that followed air and ground assaults by government forces on the Islamist group at the weekend.

The surge in hostilities signals deadlock at stop-start peace talks involving U.S and Taliban negotiators in Doha.

Central African Republic: FPRC militia infighting clashes kill around 40 people in Bria

Militia infighting in Central African Republic (CAR) killed around 40 people over the weekend and forced several hundred from their homes, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The bloodshed was some of the worst since armed groups agreed a peace deal last February. That was meant to bring stability to a country rocked by violence since 2013, when mainly Muslim rebels in the Seleka alliance ousted the then president, prompting reprisals from mostly Christian militia.

Colombia: How National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas painfully confirmed authorities are powerless in northeast

The ELN violently reaffirmed their control over Colombia’s northeastern Arauca province on Saturday, days after Human Rights Watch (HRW) claimed “the guerrillas were the police’ there.

In one of multiple attacks, guerrillas burned a van that was transporting workers from the capital Arauca to the Caño Limon oil field.

Ukraine: 2 Ukrainian soldiers killed and 2 wounded in Donbass

Ukraine’s military said two of its soldiers were killed and two wounded in the country’s eastern Donbas region.

In a statement on January 26, the military said one soldier was killed and another wounded by gunfire, while in a separate incident another soldier was killed and another wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED).
