Pakistan: Clashes in Orakzai kill 21 talibans and 5 soldiers

Five Pakistani soldiers and at least 21 suspected militants have been killed in clashes near the Afghan border, Pakistan’s military has said.

The fighting occurred in the tribal district of Orakzai.

It came a day after military aircraft bombed areas in the district killing at least 11 people.

Militants led by Pakistani Taliban commander Hakimullah Meshud are thought to have moved to Orakzai following a troop offensive in South Waziristan.

South Korea: Sunk South Korea navy boat, navy opened fire against a boat not identified that was going toward North Korea

As helicopters and nearby boats scrambled to effect a rescue operation, a South Korean Navy patrol boat sank near the inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea on Friday night, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

As the ship sank, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the Navy fired toward the north after radar disclosed an unidentified objection in that direction at the time of the accident.

One hundred and five crew members were aboard the 1,200-ton Patrol Combat Corvette Cheonan, and 58 of them had been rescued as of 1 a.m. Saturday, military sources said. No immediate information was available about their condition or about the other men.

Maoists killed a policeman in Jharkhand and triggered two explosions in Orissa early on Tuesday just hours after they targeted a Rajdhani express blasting the rail tracks in Bihar in which the passengers had a miraculous escape after ten coaches derailed.

As their 48-hour bandh entered the second day on Tuesday, the Maoists stepped up violence leading to disruption of rail services and cancellation of several trains. There was no casualty or injury in the incident involving the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express late last night.
