The Afghanistan Taliban killed at least 43 troops at a southern military base on Thursday, taking the death toll from attacks by the insurgents this week past 120.
Of 60 soldiers manning the base in Kandahar province, 43 were killed, nine were wounded and six were missing after the militants attacked in the middle of the night, the defence ministry said.
President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday declared the liberation of the southern city of Marawi from Daesh-linked Maute terrorists after nearly five months of fighting that has left more than 1,000 people dead.
Duterte’s announcement came a day after the deaths of Abu Sayyaf head Isnilon Hapilon, the “emir” of Daesh for Southeast Asia, and Omarkhayam Maute, one of the Maute group’s key leaders, in a military assault in the main battle area.
At least five Taliban insurgents were killed in clashes with Afghan security forces in northern Jawzjan province on Wednesday night, local officials confirmed on Thursday.
In addition, four other insurgents were wounded.
More than 100 people, including 80 suspected Taliban militants and 24 soldiers have been killed since clashes began in southern Uruzgan province last week, according to regional district official Thursday.
The clashes began when a large group of Taliban fighters had stormed Chora district of Uruzgan province lying in the middle of restive Ghazni, Kandahar and Helmand provinces.
The Philippine Army said it had captured a training camp of communist rebels deep in the forests of Batangas City, after gunfights that drove hundreds of families to evacuation centers and forced 15 schools to suspend classes.
Maj. Gen. Rhoderick Parayno, commander of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, on Monday said more soldiers were being deployed to run after the rebels. Checkpoints had been set up while security in sea ports was tightened around Batangas City.
