Libya: Benghazi car bomb kills 22 people and injures 20 amid Libya clashes

A car bomb targeting security forces in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi has killed 22 people and wounded 20, a spokesman for the forces and medical officials said.

The blast occurred in a residential area in the Guwarsha district, the scene of fighting between security forces loyal to Libya’s eastern government and an alliance of Islamists and other opponents.

South Sudan: Tens of thousands flee, reporting mass killings, recruitment of child soldiers, UN says

Tens of thousands of people have fled a fresh outbreak of violence in South Sudan, reporting mass killings, looting and forced recruitment of child soldiers, UN agencies say.

Many of the refugees pouring into neighbouring Uganda, Kenya and Sudan have been carrying malnourished children, the refugee agency the UNHCR added, the victims of a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by food shortages and a cholera outbreak.

Italy: Italy would consider US request to use Sigonella air base in Libya strikes

Italy’s foreign minister says his government will evaluate any U.S. request to allow use of a Sicilian air base in the campaign of airstrikes against an Islamic State stronghold in Libya.

Paolo Gentiloni said in comments on state television Tuesday that use of the Sigonella base would be considered “if requested” and Parliament informed of any decision.

Libya: United States launches airstrikes on ISIS targets in Sirte

The United States has expanded its airstrikes against ISIS into Libya, bombing targets in the coastal city of Sirte, U.S. officials said Monday.

The attacks mark the beginning of an ongoing U.S. air campaign in Libya, a Pentagon spokesman said.

Afghanistan: Taliban attack on hotel in Kabul leaves 4 dead

At least four people died in an explosion and shootout at a hotel for foreigners in Kabul early Monday, just days after the deadliest attack on the capital in 15 years.

Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said a truck laden with explosives was detonated about 1:30 a.m. near the Northgate Hotel in the city’s northern outskirts. Two attackers then exchanged gunfire with police for several hours. Besides the two gunmen and the truck driver, one police officer was killed and two others were wounded, Rahimi said.
