Fierce clashes have erupted on Socotra as former allies in Yemen’s long-running war are battling for control of the island off the Horn of Africa.
The latest outburst of fighting on Friday pitted Saudi-backed government forces against fighters loyal to the self-styled, UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), which seeks independence for southern Yemen from the north.

Turkey was accused today of using chemical weapons in Monday’s bombing of Maxmur refugee camp in Iraqi Kurdistan, amid calls for an international investigation.
Some 80 other sites were also targeted, including Sengal refugee camp and alleged Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) positions in the Qandil mountains.

Houthi rebels say they are ready to engage in a “public dialogue” with the Saudi-led coalition to end the 5-year conflict in Yemen.
“We are ready for public dialogue with the aggression countries to reach a cease-fire and lift the 5-year siege on Yemen,” Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of the group’s Supreme Revolutionary Committee, said in an interview with the BBC to be published on Sunday.

An al-Qaeda offshoot led an offensive Monday against regime forces in northwest Syria, sparking clashes that left 19 pro-government fighters and 22 jihadists dead, a war monitor said.
“Jihadist factions led by Hurras al-Deen launched an assault on two villages in Sahl al-Ghab,” a region of the central province of Hama, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. They briefly seized the villages of Al-Fatatra and Al-Manara, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched a large-scale operation on Thursday against the Islamic State in Syria’s Deir al-Zor province after a recent increase in attacks by the extremist group.
The campaign, named “Deterrence of Terrorism,” is expected to last at least approximately one week.
