Five gunmen stormed the offices of international aid agency Save the Children in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, on Wednesday, killing at least five people and wounding 24. The assault lasted ten hours and was eventually claimed by the ISIS.
The London-based charity said it was “devastated” by the attack, and announced it was suspending all of its operations in Afghanistan immediately.
At least four gunmen stormed the Intercontinental Hotel in the Afghan capital on Saturday evening, triggering a shootout with security forces, officials said.
Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said the hotel came under attack at around 9 p.m. Afghan Special Forces arrived at the hotel in response to the attack, Danish said.
Battles continue unabated between Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Burmese Army in southern and western Kachin state, and northern Shan state in the past week.
In southern Kachin state, a Burmese army’s Infantry unit launched attacks against KIA 27th Battalion’s Nam Hka Bum Post in Mansi Township on Jan 13 at 2:20 pm. KIA sources said Kai Htik-based Burmese army troops fired 3 rounds of 105 mm mortars on Nam Hka Bum and Gawk Ngu Yang-based troops fired 10 rounds of 81 mm mortars on KIA positions during the battle.
At least 76 militants were killed in military operations conducted by the Afghan National Defence and Security Force members in the last 24 hours, across eight provinces in Afghanistan.
The country’s defence ministry confirmed the operations in a statement on Saturday: “Our forces killed 76 militants in eight provinces over the last 24 hours. Also, three key Taliban commanders named Ehsanullah, Haidar and Qahraman were among those killed in the offensives.”
Clashes between the pro-Islamic State (IS) Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and security forces in the southern Philippines since Christmas Eve has killed 25 and trapped 5,000 indigenous people in their villages, according to the Philippines military and a tribal leader.
Military air strikes were launched during the clashes, which were still on-going as of Tuesday (Jan 9), in the municipalities of Datu Hoffer, Datu Unsay and Datu Saudi in the Maguindanao province.
