An Afghan regional governor said 25 members of the country’s elite commando units have been killed in fighting with the Taliban.
The incident, which occurred on July 15 in the northern province of Badghis, is the latest in which specially trained Afghan military units have suffered unusually high death tolls.
At least three Afghan security forces were killed Saturday when Taliban insurgents attacked a hotel, officials said, as violence continues across Afghanistan despite US-led efforts to end the war.
The assault took place in Qala-i-Naw, the capital of the western province of Badghis, when attackers struck a commercial area housing the hotel and several shops in the small city.
The Afghan Special Forces killed 16 Taliban militants during the operations in Wardak and Logar provinces.
The informed military officials said Tuesday that the Special Forces killed 6 Taliban militants during an operation in Chak-e Wardak district of Wardak province.
One alleged New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed during a series of encounters with government forces in Victoria town in Oriental Mindoro province Wednesday and Thursday.
Capt. Patrick Jay Retumban, public affairs chief of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division based in Tanay, Rizal, said in a report that the first encounter between communist guerrillas and soldiers from the Army’s 76th Infantry Battalion, under Lt. Fierce clashes erupted between the Myanmar Army (or Tatmadaw) and the Arakan Army (AA) in Rathedaung, Kyauktaw and Minbya townships of N. Rakhine on Sunday.
According to the AA, the two sides clashed in two places in Rathedaung Township at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
