Rising tensions between the Burma Army and rebel groups in eastern Burma sparked another incident on Friday, when Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) fighters detained eight soldiers and police officers, and injured two soldiers in an exchange of fire.
As of Friday evening, a DKBA commander said his troops were still detaining the soldiers and officers in central Mon State’s Kyaikmayaw Township, and negotiations over their release were ongoing.
Over 700 Taliban fighters are attacking Afghan military posts with the aim of taking and holding ground.
Hundreds of Taliban fighters have stormed a strategic district in an Afghan province southwest of the capital and are on the verge of capturing it after killing dozens of people and beheading some in days of fighting, officials said on Friday.
As Burma’s government and ethnic armed groups prepare to meet for peace talks next week, on-and-off fighting between the Burmese Army and ethnic Karen rebels continues to plague eastern Burma.
The latest clash took place on Sept. 9 in an area controlled by Brigade 5 of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), the military wing of the Karen National Union (KNU), near the Oo Thu Hta region of Karen State’s Papun District.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar TTP, the new splinter group of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan (Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP), released a graphic as well as a statement celebrating al-Qaeda’s attack on the US on Sept. 11, 2001. Sixty-five suspected militants were killed in aerial strikes by fighter jets in the North Waziristan tribal region, the military said on Wednesday. The claims, however, could not be independently verified as journalists have limited access to the restive tribal agency.
A statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations said, “Three terrorist hideouts were destroyed in precision strikes in the northwest of Dattakhel early on Wednesday killing 35 terrorists.”
