At least 16 policemen were killed as militants stormed police checkpoints in Kandahar province of Afghanistan on Friday, an official said.
“A group of Taliban rebels attacked some security checkpoints in Miwand district, triggering a gun battle,” the official told Xinhua news agency.
Some one hundred people fled ongoing battles between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Burma Army in northern Shan State’s Namhsan Township, arriving in Mandalay on Sunday over concerns for their children’s education.
A high school and a middle school in Namhsan town and three primary schools in nearby villages have shut due to the instability and lack of students, Namhsan Constituency (2) lawmaker Daw Khin Myint Swe told The Irrawaddy.
Burmese army artillery units unceasingly pounded KIA’s Ngwa Le outpost in southeastern Kachin State fended by its 3rd Battalion troops under 5th Brigade on January 10, KLN’s frontline source reported.

Separate bomb attacks in Afghanistan have left at least 45 people dead and 105 injured.
Twin Taliban blasts struck near the Afghan parliament in Kabul this afternoon, killing at least 31 people and wounding 70 others in the rush-hour attack that shattered a relative lull in violence in the capital.
According to Tasnim news agency, one of IRGC forces was martyred in the attack and three others were injured.
The attack was carried out at 11:30 local time, as armed men tried to cross the border into Iran.
Majid Aqa Babaei, director of the Interior Ministry department for border affairs, said the terrorists were pushed back by Iranian forces and could not achieve their evil goals.
