Madagascar’s presidency said on Sunday that “an attempted illegal and forcible seizure of power” was underway in the African nation, without providing details, a day after some soldiers joined a protest movement that had begun last month.

Troops from the elite CAPSAT unit that helped President Andry Rajoelina seize power in a 2009 coup urged fellow soldiers to disobey orders and back the youth-led protests, which began on September 25 and pose the most serious challenge to Rajoelina’s rule since his reelection in 2023.

The conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has entered a new phase with the use of drones and heavy artillery in military operations against M23 rebels and allied groups, raising concerns over the future of regional peace efforts.

The Congo River Alliance (CRA), linked to M23, accused the Congolese government and Burundian forces of deploying “kamikaze drones” in South Kivu to strike areas near Uvira and surrounding villages.

Six soldiers have been killed in a border skirmish between South Sudan and Uganda.

The Ugandan government claimed that South Sudanese soldiers were in Ugandan territory and refused to leave,
leading to the firefight. Reports indicate that five South Sudanese were killed, with one Ugandan also dying.

In Mali, Azawad rebels successfully launched an assault on a convoy of junta forces, capturing their equipment and weapons.

Mohamed Elmaulud Ramadane, spokesperson for the Azawad People’s Strategic Defense Program, confirmed that the entire convoy was neutralized and the battle had concluded.

Nigeria’s military has “neutralised” 24 Boko Haram terrorists in coordinated operations in the West African country’s northeast, an army statement said on Thursday.

Nigerian troops backed by air support and local forces eliminated several Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in northeastern operations between July 4 and 9, the army wrote on X.
