Two military sites of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in Jonglei state came under heavy attack early Wednesday morning from forces of General Peter Gatdet Yak.
The assault cames just days after president Kiir accuses his political adversaries of an “attempted coup”—a claim widely interpreted as an indefensible. Some government officials call it “an inside job” designed to use as a reason against anyone who tries to challenge Kiir’s leadership.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir declared a curfew in Juba, accusing soldiers allied with the former vice president of attempting a coup overnight in the capital.
In a press conference in the capital Monday, Kiir said a group of soldiers allied with former Vice President Riek Machar launched an attack late Sunday at army headquarters.

UN peacekeeping troops in Democratic Republic of Congo have launched an offensive against Rwandan ethnic Hutu rebels operating in the eastern part of the country, the UN command said Wednesday.
“MONUSCO’s intervention brigade launched operations against the FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) yesterday, Tuesday, in Kalembe, in the Masisi region,” the mission said on Twitter.
The Congolese government signed a peace deal on Thursday with the M23 rebels it had been fighting until they laid down their arms last month, ending weeks of wrangling over the terms of an agreement.
The deal apparently concludes the most serious rebellion in Congo in a decade but analysts say the region remains fragile, not least because the agreement does not address the status of other armed groups.

Uganda troops have captured 19 Lord’s Resistance Army rebels in Central African Republic (CAR), the African Union said, a sizeable victory in the hunt for the elusive rebel group.
The Ugandan army is leading a US-backed African Union force tasked with capturing the LRA’s leaders, several of whom are wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

French forces have killed 19 Islamist fighters during security operations in Mali’s northern region of Timbuktu, according to a senior French officer in the West African nation..
Pockets of al Qaeda-linked fighters are still holding out across the north of the country, nearly a year into a French offensive aimed at driving them from the desert region they occupied for most of 2012 after hijacking a rebellion by Tuareg separatists.
