Kenya: Kenyan troops advance towards the Somali town of Afmadow

Kenyan troops are making further advances some 120 kilometers deep inside Somalia to seize the rebel-held town of Afmadow, military officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Military Operations Information Officer Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the soldiers will soon capture the town which has been surrounded by al-Shabaab fighters blamed for spate of abductions involving foreigners in Kenya.

“Our troops are advancing towards the Afmadow very soon and our activities will be concentrated in this town,” Chirchir told Xinhua by telephone on Tuesday.

However, local officials said the progress of Kenya and Somali troops has been slowed by muddy terrain after heavy rain.

Libya: Capture of Bani Walid almost complete, National Transitional Council says

The National Transitional Council has announced through its military spokesman Col. Ahmed Bani, that its forces have managed to take almost complete control of the desert enclave of Bani Walid, one of the two last remaining bastions loyal to the Libyan leader Muammar Al Qathafi.

Bani said Monday that after two days of fighting and the capture of the strategic centre of the town, now 95 percent of the Bani Walid, which is 140 kilometres southeast of Tripoli, is in the hands of the revolutionaries.

The NTC fighters are also predicting that the remaining five per cent in which there are some pockets of resistance should be under their control within hours.

Kenya: Kenyan troops enter in Somalia to attack al-Shabaab rebels

Kenyan troops have crossed the border into war-torn Somalia to attack Islamist al-Shabaab rebels they accuse of being behind several recent kidnappings of foreigners, Kenyan officials said Sunday.

“We have crossed into Somalia in pursuit of the al-Shabaab, who are responsible for the kidnappings and attacks on our country,” government spokesman Alfred Mutua told AFP.

Afghanistan: US base in eastern Afghanistan attacked by talibans, 4 killed and 2 wounded

Armed attackers have attempted to blast their way into an American base in eastern Afghanistan, striking before dawn with rocket-propelled grenades and a vehicle packed with explosives.

The attackers failed to breach the gate of the base in Panjshir province’s Rakoha district, though they did hit a security tower with a rocket-propelled grenade, a local police chief said on Saturday.

Three of the men attacked on foot, shooting, while a fourth detonated the explosives-laden vehicle outside the gate, General Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh said. All four attackers were killed and two Afghan security guards were wounded, he said.

Burma-Myanmar: Kachin Independence Army (KIA) rebels captured an important frontline position of Burma army

In a significant victory in the four month-long civil war, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) captured an important frontline post of the Burma Army in Kachin State on Tuesday, after more than 20 hours of fighting, according to local people.

KIA officers and local residents confirmed the Jan Mai post, located on a high mountain top in west of Loije in Manmaw (Bhamo) District, was captured by the combined forces of KIA Battalions 16 and 21, under 3rd Brigade and the People’s Army.

The combined KIA forces attacked the Jan Mai Post, which was manned by about 20 government troops from Shwe Nyaung Pyin (Waingmaw)-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 321, at about 4 a.m. local time.
