Dozens of people were killed and injured in a “terrorist attack” in China’s far western Xinjiang region, home to the mainly Muslim Uighur minority, state media reported Tuesday.
A knife-wielding gang attacked a police station and government offices in Shache county early Monday, the official Xinhua news agency said citing local police, and “dozens of Uighur and Han civilians were killed or injured”.
Abu Sayyaf gunmen attacked Filipino civilians traveling to celebrate the end of Ramadan with their families on Monday, killing 21, including at least six children, in a brazen road attack that was the bloodiest in recent years by the violent militant group, police and military officials said.
Eleven other civilians were wounded as the group traveled in two vans in a coastal village in Talipao town in predominantly Muslim Sulu province, where the militants have survived in jungle camps despite years of U.S.-backed Philippine military offensives.
More than 800 ethnic Palaung villagers in northern Shan State’s Namkham Township have fled their homes in recent days to avoid the growing number of clashes between the Burma Army and Palaung rebels, according to a local NGO.
De De Poe Jeing, secretary of the Ta’ang Women’s Organization, said more than 800 people had fled Mong Poe village and arrived at nearby Namkham town, located on the Burma-China border, on Monday.
Resumed fighting from July 20 till July 21, 2014 between Burma Army Battalion 248 and Shan State Army-North (SSA-N) Brigade 72 in Kehsi township, southern Shan State, has displaced people from six villages.
According to Sai Harn, a Shan youth who assisted the displaced villagers, the six villages include Parng Jay, Wan Kyawng, Par Teap, Wan Kwarn, Parng Mong and Parng Mike Kay, in Kehsi township. Sai Harn could not confirm the number of newly displaced villagers.
The ethnic Palaung, also known as the Ta’ang, are a hill tribe people mostly living in northern Shan State. Like many other ethnic groups, they have waged an armed struggle against the Burmese government since 1963.
After the Palaung State Liberation Organization signed a ceasefire with the former military government in 1991 (and disarmed in 2005), another Palaung army known as the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) was established by the Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF) to continue the fight for equality and self-determination.
