Forces aligned with Libya’s internationally recognised government took control of an air base south-west of Tripoli on Monday after a sustained assault, in what could be their most significant advance for nearly a year.
Watiya air base, 125 km (80 miles) from the capital, has been an important strategic foothold for forces loyal to eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar, who launched an offensive to capture Tripoli in April 2019.
At least five militants were killed on Wednesday in an operation executed by Somali Army, a senior military official said, although Al-Shabaab is yet to confirm the latest onslaught against the group.
The five were killed during an army operation carried out between recently liberated town of Janaale and Qoryoley, which are notorious territories of the Al-Shabaab, which controls large swathes of rural southern and central Somalia.
Approximately 75 members of the Boko Haram armed group have been killed in the southeast Sahel state of Niger and in neighbouring Nigeria.
Twenty-five “terrorists” were killed on Monday south of Diffa, the main city in southeast Niger, while “about 50 … were neutralised” on the same day on Nigerian soil in the Lake Chad region in two operations by a regional force, the defence ministry said in a statement quoted by the AFP news agency on Wednesday.
Warlord Khalifa Haftar’s militia groups, backed by Wagner and Sudanese mercenaries, launched an all-out attack in Mashrou and Yarmouk frontlines in southern Tripoli on Saturday night, but it ended in failure.
The attack was backed by sleeper cells and a wave of fake news on TV and social media pages. As the fighting began, media outlets loyal to Haftar claimed that “our forces had taken control of Abu Salim and Furnaj districts and members of Presidential Council, ministers and Turkish officers had escaped to Misrata.”
Twenty-three militias were killed in fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and militias in Ituri province, the army said Friday.
After fierce battles with members of the Cooperative For the Development of Congo (CODECO) militia group Thursday, the army regained control of four villages once occupied by militiamen in Bese, 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of Bunia, in the territory of Djugu, army spokesman Lt. Jules Ngongo, told reporters.
