Israel: Israeli army strikes Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) targets in Gaza and Syria

The IDF struck numerous targets belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terror group in Syria and throughout the Gaza Strip following rocket fire towards southern Israel over the course of Sunday evening.

The military said that Israeli Air Force fighter jets struck PIJ targets south of the capital of Damascus, including a compound which was “used as a hub of Islamic Jihad’s activity in Syria” as well as dozens of terror targets belonging to the group across in the Strip.

Afghanistan: US and Afghan Taliban start partial truce

A seven-day “reduction in violence” between the US and the Afghan Taliban has begun, officials say.

Syria: Russia accuses Turkey of shelling Syrian army to help militants

Russia accused Turkey on Thursday of providing artillery support to militants fighting the Syrian army and said militants briefly broke through Syrian military positions in Idlib, Russian news agencies reported.

Russia’s air force carried out strikes on pro-Turkish militants who burst through Syrian government positions in two areas of Idlib province, allowing the Syrian army to repel the attacks, the ministry was cited as saying.

South Sudan: Former rebel leader Riek Machar agrees to form national unity government with President Salva Kiir

South Sudan’s former rebel leader Riek Machar said he has agreed to form a unity government with President Salva Kiir following a meeting at state buildings on Thursday. “We had a meeting with the president on the outstanding issues. We have agreed to form the government on 22 February,” Machar said. President Kiir confirmed the agreement.

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 but plunged into a civil war in 2013 when President Kiir sacked his then-deputy Machar, who went on to lead a rebel faction.

Libya: Government of National Accord (GNA) suspending ceasefire talks after Tripoli port attack

Libya’s internationally recognised government has said it is suspending its participation in ceasefire negotiations hosted by the United Nations in Geneva, hours after an attack by renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar’s forces on the capital’s port.

In a statement late on Tuesday, the presidential council of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) said it would respond firmly to the attack at the appropriate time.
