Iraq: Iraqi forces launch new offensive against Islamic State (IS) in Mosul
Iraqi forces on Thursday started a new offensive as part of a US-backed campaign to drive the Islamic State extremist militia from its last key stronghold of Mosul.
The attack was launched early Thursday in the northern part of Mosul’s western section, the Joint Operations Command said in a statement.
“The troops are now fighting battles to destroy fortifications of the enemy and his capabilities with the aim of liberating the rest of Mosul,” the statement added.
On February 19, Iraqi troops started an onslaught to regain western Mosul from Islamic State, almost a month after they recaptured the eastern part of the city.
