Syrian government troops captured a northwestern village known for its medieval fortress on Thursday as they move deeper toward Idlib province, the last major rebel stronghold, activists and pro-government media said.
The latest wave of fighting that began last week is the most serious challenge yet to a cease-fire in the region, brokered by Russia and Turkey in September.

Around four government troops and five Houthi fighters were killed on Tuesday in fighting between the two sides in the southeastern province of al-Bayda, a military official told Xinhua, Trend reported.
Scores of Houthi fighters launched an armed attack, accompanied by heavy shelling on the positions of government forces in the area of AlHumegan located in the southwest of al-Bayda province, the local military source said on condition of anonymity.

The Israeli military lifted protective restrictions on residents in southern Israel on Monday, while Gaza’s ruling Hamas militant group reported a cease-fire deal had been reached to end the deadliest fighting between the two sides since a 2014 war.
The escalation had killed 23 on the Gaza side, both militants and civilians, while on the Israeli side four civilians were killed from incoming fire.

Turkish airstrikes on Tuesday hit PKK terrorist targets in northern Iraq, according to the National Defense Ministry.
The Turkish jets destroyed weapon positions, shelters, and ammunition depots used by PKK terrorists in the Gara, Hakurk, and Avasin-Basyan regions, the ministry said in a statement.
