Turkey and the US were on a collision course Tuesday as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to launch an offensive against a Kurdish militia in northern Syria – a move Pentagon officials deem “unacceptable”.
Erdogan has repeatedly warned that the Turkish military is preparing an operation in Syria against the Kurdish YPG militia, which the US has supported as the main fighting force against the Islamic State (IS) group.
Clashes between the Turkish army and the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northeastern city of Qamishli have erupted on Saturday, Iranian Fars News Agency reported, citing pro-Syrian rebel Step News.
Turkish Army shelled SDF military points in Qamishli and near the border with Turkey while two military points of the Turkish Army were destroyed, three Turkish soldiers were killed and four others were injured during two separate military offensives by the SDF, according to Fars News Agency.
Al-Qaeda gunmen killed 19 soldiers in an attack on an army base in southern Yemen on Friday, security officials said, a day after deadly assaults by rebels and a bomber.
The gunmen stormed Al Mahfad base in Abyan province and remained inside for several hours before military reinforcements came, three security officials told AFP, adding that the soldiers were killed in clashes with the extremists.
Clashes late Wednesday night between remnants of the Islamic State and Kurdish security forces near the Kurdistan Region’s southern town of Kifri resulted in several casualties.
The attack by the jihadist group’s sleeper cell took place in Kulajo area, southeast of Kifri, Kurdistan 24 Correspondent Harem Jaff reported, citing Salah Baban, a member of the Qarataqa Council, a nearby town.
Israel struck Syrian army targets in near al-Harra, where Western intelligence sources previously said Iranian-backed militias are based, Syrian official news agency SANA reported Tuesday.
At least six people were injured in an Israeli rocket attack, a monitoring group reported on Wednesday.
