Air strikes against militant targets in Iraq’s restive western province of Anbar killed at least 50 militants, the defence ministry said Wednesday.
Security forces “received accurate information and carried out painful and effective air strikes against terrorist gatherings in Anbar yesterday, January 21, that killed more than 50 terrorists,” a ministry statement said.
Iraqi security forces have launched an operation against Al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Ramadi.
Large areas of Ramadi, the provincial capital of the western Anbar Province, fell to militant control in late December.
On January 19, heavy clashes were reported between militants and Iraqi police, which were supported by local tribesmen and SWAT teams.
Clashes between Yemeni troops and secessionist militants killed four people Friday in southern Yemen, two of them soldiers, sources on both sides said.
The fighting broke out when the militants ambushed a military vehicle, killing the soldiers and wounding four others, a military source told AFP.
Four soldiers have been killed in an attack by tribal militiamen in Hadramout province, in south-east of Yemen.
Army post has been attacked near Chehr, military sources referred it, blaming a coalition of local tribes.
At least 45 rebels fighters from four different brigades were killed today in a series of clashes in Homs, with the biggest toll coming during an ambush in a government-held district.
“They were killed as they tried to launch an operation to end the siege of Homs,” noted the pro-rebel Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The city remains divided between rebel and government-held areas, and activists have complained the rebel-held areas are struggling to get access to food.
