Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), also known as Ansar Al-Shariah, claimed responsibility on Wednesday evening for a remote-detonated car bomb which exploded outside the Iranian ambassador’s residence in Sana’a at approximately 9:00 a.m. One person was killed and 17 others were injured in the attack.
AQAP claimed responsibility on their Twitter account and posted photos of the scene following the attack.
Iran has denied conducting airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Iraq, Reuters reports, citing a senior Iranian official.
“Iran has never been involved in any air strikes against the Daesh targets in Iraq. Any cooperation in such strikes with America is also out of question for Iran,” the senior official told the news agency on condition of anonymity. The Islamic State, a radical Sunni group currently controlling large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria, is also known as Daesh.
Bahrain’s foreign minister says Gulf states are launching a joint military command based in Saudi Arabia to counter threats from militant jihadis and Shia Iran.
Sheikh Khalid al-Khalifa said the joint command force, which analysts say will eventually have several hundred thousand soldiers under its control, would begin military operations after a Gulf Co-operation Council summit due to take place later this month in Qatar.
Heavy fighting resumed between Kurdish forces and Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Kobane in the early hours of Saturday, a Peshmerga commander in the city said.
“Fighting has broken out in the south and northeast of the city and heavy weaponry is used in the fight,” Brigadier Toufik Khazyavayi told Rudaw by telephone.
The Iraqi army and Kurdish peshmerga forces backed by the coalition air force on Wednesday repelled a major attack by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, according to sources from the city.
“They are targeting Kirkuk and they want to control the oil sites,” said peshmerga Major General Westa Rasul, according to AFP.
