Militants have killed five Russian soldiers in the troubled North Caucasus region of Chechnya, officials say.
The gunfight broke out on Thursday night in forested mountains south-west of the region’s capital Grozny, Russia’s interior ministry said.
Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency said six more soldiers were wounded in the skirmish against some 15 militants.
Outgoing Croatian president Stjepan Mesic earlier this month threatened to intervene militarily in the event that Bosnia’s Serb entity, Republika Srpska, attempts to secede and establish itself as an Independent State. He was responding to repeated separatist noises on the part of the Republika Srpska’s aggressively nationalistic prime minister, Milorad Dodik, who makes no secret of his hostility to the state of Bosnia-Hercegovina and his designs against its territorial integrity, and whose atrocity denial and friendship for convicted war-criminals indicate a dangerous contempt for the norms of civilised behaviour.
Mesic has warned that if Dodik announces a referendum on secession – as the first step toward the Republika Srpska’s unification with Serbia to form a ‘Great Serbia’ – he would send the Croatian Army south across the River Sava to cut in half the Bosnian Serb entity, which ‘would then have to disappear’.
A meeting between the delegation of the Geneva talks Co-Chairs of the EU, OSCE and UN and the discussions’ South Ossetian participants – Special Representative for Post-Conflict Settlement Boris Chochiev, Foreign Minister Murat Djioev and others, was held in Tskhinval. The Co-Chairs’ Delegation was headed by the EU Envoy Pierre Morel. It is worth mentioning that after Kazakhstan has assumed the OSCE Chairmanship, the Organization is represented at the Discussions in Geneva by Ambassador Bolat Nurgaliev. Boris Chochiev had expressed his assuredness that the participation of new representatives in the Geneva Discussions would give new impetus to the talks.
According to Chochiev, the situation was difficult and the 9th round of talks would not be easy either.
“The more we work, the more we are interested in concrete results”. “Our southern neighbors continue to organize provocations, abduct our citizens and groundlessly blame us in many faults.This is the result of the fact that the aggressor did not receive any corresponding international assessment to its criminal actions. The Georgian authorities did not calm down event after the publication of the report of Tagliavini’s Commission, where thing were clearly explained”, said Chochiev. He emphasized that the South Ossetian side can provide proved evidences of Georgia’s being prepared for a new war.

A suicide bomber has killed at least six policemen and injured fourteen in an attack on a traffic police station in the southern Russian Republic of Dagestan on Wednesday.
The attacker drove his car into the gates of the station. The wounded policemen have been taken to hospital.
