Police and federal security service (FSB) operatives on Wednesday killed two militants in Russia’s predominantly Islamic republic of Tatarstan, as the radical Islamist insurgency shows signs of spreading from the North Caucasus to central Russia.
“The gunmen were killed in the police assault on the building,” spokesman for the Russian Investigative committee, Vladimir Markin, said. “They were suspects in the recent attacks on Muslim leaders in Tatarstan.”
Russian security forces killed 49 militants in a long-term, sweeping operation across Russia’s volatile north Caucasus. Nine of those killed were considered to be “odious” guerilla commanders in the drive to carve out an Islamist state in the region.
The “large-scale and massive” September-October operation in several republics in the region involved forces from both the Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry, Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee (NAK) said on Sunday.
KC sources report that the forests, located south of the village of Dattykh in the Sunzha district, were came under heavy artillery shelling on Tuesday night. Heavy artillery and mortar batteries were used.
It is to be recalled that a Mujaheddin unit attacked Russian invaders near Dattykh about 6:00 pm on Tuesday. Precise data on the losses of invaders is not available. Local residents, meanwhile, reported that many of Russian invaders have been killed and wounded.
Another mortar shell from Syria struck Turkish territory on Saturday, prompting a fourth straight day of retaliatory artillery fire, and reviving fears that the crisis in Syria could spiral into a regional conflict.
The latest shelling comes a day after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Syria not to test Turkey’s “limits and determination” and insisted that his country “was not bluffing” with its warnings.
Sources in the Syrian capital of Damascus said that Turkish artillery fire hit various Syrian military targets in Idlib city.
