19 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 78 injured in the past 24 hours in the fighting near Debaltseve, Ukraine’s military spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov said on Wednesday.
Vladyslav Seleznyov, military spokesman: “As a result of shelling, rocket attacks and military clashes, Ukraine lost 19 servicemen including 17 servicemen of the Ukraine armed forces and two interior ministry staff. 78 servicemen of various security bodies are in hospitals with wounds of various severity.”
Ukraine’s Azov Battalion, famed for its near-suicidal bravery and ultra-nationalist views, is spearheading a Ukrainian counter-offensive along the country’s Black Sea coast today.
Posting a picture of their troops on Feb. 10 outside Pavlopil town hall, some 35 kilometers northeast of their base in the strategic port city of Mariupol, the battalion said that it had also seized the villages of Oktyabyr and Shyrokyne on their way to assault the Russian and separatist-held city of Novoazovsk.
More than 40 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in fighting in Donbas in the past 24 hours, deputy head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) militia Eduard Basurin said Sunday.
“The losses of the military structures of the Ukrainian government in the past 24 hours were as follows: 11 tanks, eight of which were destroyed and three were captured… nine units of artillery, 11 cars. When it comes to personnel, 45 people were killed,” Basurin said.
Russian-backed militants are continuing to shell the village of Pisky near Donetsk airport with mortars, the press office of the government’s Anti-Terrorist Operation headquarters wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
Overnight the militants attacked the settlements of Nevelske and Vodiane with Grad multiple rocket launcher systems, and shelled the villages of Krasnogorovka and Pisky using mortars, the press office said.
“A general mobilization is planned in the DNR in 10 days. Ten thousand men will be called up,” Zakharchenko said.
He said the joint army of the Donetsk and Luhansk Peoples’ Republics militant organization would number 100,000. He did not say how many men the militant organizations current field against Ukrainian forces.
