Three Indonesian soldiers were killed Thursday in a gunbattle with Papuan independence fighters, the military said, adding to more than two dozen deaths in the conflict since November.
The military spokesman for Indonesia’s easternmost Papua region, Muhammad Aidi, said a force of 50-70 rebels armed with military-grade weapons as well as spears and arrows attacked a group of 25 soldiers in a battle lasting several hours.

Taliban insurgents targeted an Afghan army corps at their camp in southern Helmand province, killing at least 23, officials said Saturday.
Omar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, said 16 other troops were wounded in the attack that began Friday and continued into Saturday in Wahser district.

More than 100 militants have been killed following military operations in 11 of 34 Afghan provinces, the country’s Ministry of Defense said Thursday.
“Up to 103 terrorists were killed, 34 wounded and eight others arrested during four military operations, 69 special operations and 18 airstrikes conducted by Afghan Air Force since early Wednesday,” the ministry said in a statement.

Pakistan said Wednesday that it downed two Indian fighter jets and captured a pilot, escalating hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbors a day after Indian warplanes struck inside Pakistani territory for the first time in five decades.
The rapid turn of events raised fears that the historical animosities between India and Pakistan could be steering them toward another war.
