South Korea vows stern retaliation against North Korea’s attacks

President Lee Myung-bak ordered his military Tuesday to punish North Korea for its artillery attacks “through action,” not just words, saying it is important to stop the communist regime from contemplating additional provocation.

“The provocation this time can be regarded as an invasion of South Korean territory. In particular, indiscriminate attacks on civilians are a grave matter,” a stern-faced Lee said during a visit to the headquarters of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in central Seoul.

The North fired some 100 coastline artillery rounds across the western sea border onto Yeonpyeong Island Tuesday afternoon, killing two marines and wounding more than a dozen others. Three civilians on the small island, home to more than 1,600 residents, mostly fishermen and their families, and a marine corps base, were also wounded.

The attack set houses and forests on fire on the island that lies just south of the Northern Limit Line, the de-facto maritime border between the two Koreas drawn at the end of their 1950-53 war.

North Korean artillery strikes South Korean island of Yeonpyeong with dozens of shells, dozens wounded

North Korea fired dozens of coastal artillery shells, some of which fell on the South’s Yeonpyeong Island near the tense western inter-Korean border, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday.

“The North fired dozens of artillery rounds from its Gaemeori western coastal artillery base at 14:34 p.m. In response to the military provocations, we fired back dozens of rounds with K9 self-propelled howitzers,” JCS spokesman Col. Lee Bung-woo told reporters.

In the artillery firing, one marine solider was killed while a dozen others suffered injuries, as of press time. The military was trying to evacuate civilians on the island near the border. Several civilians were reported to have suffered injuries.

Afghanistan: Talibans launched major attacks in Nangarhar and Kunduz

Attacks in two different Afghan provinces - Nangarhar in the east and Kunduz in the north - have left several people dead, including many of the assailants.

In Saturday’s first attack, a pre-dawn Taliban raid was thwarted by soldiers at a US military facility - Forward Operating Base Fenty - that is part of the Jalalabad airfield.

An Isaf statement said that no Afghan National Army (ANA) troops or Isaf soldiers were killed in the incident.

Eight attackers were killed, many of whom had been wearing ANA uniforms, Ahmad Zia Abdulzoi, a Nangarhar government spokesman, said.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said there were 14 attackers and that 11 of them were killed, but the claim could not be independently corroborated.

Burma-Myanmar: 6 rebel groups form new alliance called Federal Army

burma.jpg

Six armed ethnic groups that formed an alliance this week against the Burmese Army amid fears of a post-election junta offensive have set the formation of a “Federal Army” as their main priority, according to Radio Free Asia and independent sources.

The primary goal was set after a series of meetings in northern Thailand yesterday, at which the bloc also decided to create a working committee to carry out political and military strategies as a joint force.

The alliance comprises ceasefire groups, the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO), New Mon State Party (NMSP) and Shan State Army North (SSA-North); and non-ceasefire groups, the Karen National Union (KNU), Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and Chin National Front (CNF).
