India: Indian security forces kill 16 Maoist rebel fighters

Indian security forces have killed 16 Maoist rebel fighters, including a senior commander, in the eastern state of Jharkhand, as authorities intensify efforts to crush the long-running insurgency.

According to an international news agency, more than 10,000 people have died in the decades-old conflict waged by the guerrillas, who say they are fighting for the rights of marginalised Indigenous communities in mineral-rich regions of India.

Syria: ISIS fighters flee jail as Syrian army clashes with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)

The Syrian army has announced a curfew in the city of al-Shaddadi in the country’s northeast after the escape of ISIL (ISIS) fighters from the city’s prison amid clashes with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), according to the state news agency, SANA.

The Syrian army told Al Jazeera Arabic on Monday that it was now in complete control of the city and the prison housing suspected ISIL detainees as its troops searched al-Shaddadi and its surrounding areas for the escaped fighters.

Syria: Thousands flee clashes between Syrian government and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Kurdish fighters in Aleppo

At least 12 people have reportedly been killed during two days of intense clashes between Syrian government and Kurdish fighters in the northern city of Aleppo.

Tens of thousands of civilians have also fled the Kurdish majority neighbourhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, which the Syrian army shelled on Wednesday afternoon after designating them as “closed military areas”.

Yemen: Southern Transitional Council (STC) separatist group says it will dissolve after its head fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Yemen’s main separatist group and its institutions will be dismantled effective Friday, the group’s secretary-general said, following weeks of unrest in areas of southern Yemen and a day after its leader fled to the United Arab Emirates.

Abdulrahman Jalal al-Sebaihi said the Southern Transitional Council would shut down all of its bodies and offices inside and outside Yemen, citing internal disagreements and mounting regional pressure.

The United States hit Venezuela with a “large-scale strike” early Saturday and said its president, Nicolás Maduro, had been captured and flown out of the country after months of stepped-up pressure by Washington — an extraordinary nighttime operation announced by President Donald Trump on social media hours after the attack.

Multiple explosions rang out and low-flying aircraft swept through Caracas, the capital, as Maduro’s government immediately accused the United States of attacking civilian and military installations. The Venezuelan government called it an “imperialist attack” and urged citizens to take to the streets.
