Spain: Armed basque separatist group Eta declared ceasefire
Armed Basque separatist group Eta says it will not “carry out armed actions” in its campaign for independence.
In a video obtained exclusively by the BBC, the group said it took the decision several months ago “to put in motion a democratic process”.
The Spanish government has not responded. In the past it has said it will only negotiate with Eta if it renounces violence and disarms.
Eta’s violent campaign has led to more than 820 deaths over the past 40 years.
It has called two ceasefires in the past, but abandoned them both.
Under pressure
It is unclear whether Eta is declaring a permanent or temporary ceasefire.

Somaliland: A radical change?

Although the international media has under-reported it, the world has recently witnessed a major event in the Horn of Africa - a free, fair and generally peaceful election in Somaliland.
On July 2, Isse Yusuf Mohamud, the chairman of Somaliland’s election commission, announced that Ahmed Mohamud Silanyo, the leader of the opposition Kulmiye Party, won the presidential election with 49.59 per cent of the 538,246 votes cast. The incumbent president, Dahir Riyale Kahin, came a distant second with 33.23 per cent of the votes.
International observers declared the election “free and fair” and praised the conduct of political actors and stakeholders involved in the election campaign.
Even more significantly, unlike many leaders in the region, Kahin embraced the popular verdict and accepted defeat gracefully.
A peaceful transfer of power is now underway.

Ingushetia: Reportage in republic at border with Chechnya prey of civil war

Plastic guns and shouting: two children with short hair chase one another among the cheeses of ricotta of bazaar in Nazran, Russian Republic of Ingushetia.
They play at cops and robbers that here is in «menty and waha», «cops and islamists». The problem for Moscow is that «goods» of play are the «waha», or wahabiti, islamic foundamentalists.
It’s not yet Afghanistan, but Ingushetia is already a Russia talibanization. Vladimir Putin commands during the day, Dokku Umarov, Emire of North Caucasus, during the night.
Moscow patrols go fast, spies of clandestine Emirate watch every movement.
I «governments» live under siege, like in a occupation land. Also first city, Nazran, is changing face like is happened in Bagdad during faida between shiites and sunnis: there are districts pro-russia and others pro-islamics.

Somaliland votes under tight security

The self-proclaimed state of Somaliland closed its borders Saturday as voters chose their president amid fears Islamists from neighbouring Somalia could try to disrupt the polls.
The northern territory has been more stable than Somalia since it broke away in 1991 but a message warning voters to stay home by the leader of the Al-Qaeda-inspired Shebab movement drew draconian security measures.
“All our country’s forces are locking the borders. Movements and transport inside Somaliland are also forbidden except for those authorised by the national election commission (NEC),” police chief Mohamed Saqadi Dubad said.

Chechnya: dictatorship sleek, dirty Grozny doesn’t exist more, but the hell is behind the facade

Anna Politkovskaya was killed in her condominium in Moscow on October 7 2006. In her computer had another article against Ramzan Kadyroy, man that today is president of Chechnya.
For seven years the journalist wrote about this little republic of Russia Federation such as a black hole of conscience, where rapes, tortures and massacres were normal for soldiers and militias.
«A place - sustained - where many can do what they want and others have to accept it. Russia continues to permit that exist a place of country where civils rights don’t exist. It is a very risky choice» («A little corner of hell», Rizzoli 2008). Four years have passed since her death. Chechnya is still that «place»?
