Somalia: Airport under attack of al-Shabab, 8 killed included African Union (AU) peacekeeping troops

At least eight people have been killed in bomb blasts at the main airport in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, witnesses have said.

The victims in Thursday’s blasts included African Union (AU) peacekeeping troops.

Witnesses said a suicide bomber rammed a car into an AU peacekeepers post outside the airport and that they heard a second explosion inside the compound shortly afterwards.

A spokesman with the African Union confirmed the car bomb attack.

Mohamed Abdi, a shopkeeper, told Reuters news agency: “I have seen four bleeding AU soldiers being carried at the gate. At least eight dead bodies, most of them Amisom soldiers were lying on the ground.”

Two women begging in the street were also killed and one policeman was wounded, said Abdul Rahman Yussef, a Somali army official.

South Sudan: The ugandan rebels Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) kill 8 people in South Sudan raid

The Ugandan rebels Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has killed eight people in raids over the weekend in South Sudan’s state of Western Equatoria, a local official has said.

The LRA, which is a sectarian religious and military group from northern Uganda, has a history of committing atrocities in the region.

It began as an Acholi tribe rebel movement seeking to overthrow the Ugandan Government. What it stands for now is a matter of debate but in 2005 the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued its first five arrest warrants for LRA leader, Joseph Kony, his deputy and three of his commanders.

Somalia: In Mogadishu more than 230 civilians killed and at least 400 wounded in last 2 weeks

More than 230 civilians have been killed and at least 400 wounded in Mogadishu in last two weeks in fightings between somali government troops and islamic rebels al-Shabab.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr) launched the alarm. “Fightings in these last two weeks between transitional’s government and al-Shabab caused the death of more than 230 civilians and caused at least 400 wounded and 23 thousands displaced”, Unhcr has explained, that has talked about a continuous “deterioration” of situation in the capital.

According estimates of Onu agency, more than 200 thousand people fled their own house this year.

Somalia: Al-Shabab displays hundreds fighters in out of Mogadishu

Al-Shabab fighters have Sunday displayed hundreds of their fighters in the Somali capital Mogadishu, just days after heavy fighting between the transitional government soldiers and al-Shabab in north and south of Mogadishu.

Sources said that the fighters were displayed at the military camp of Maslah in out of Mogadishu and reportedly trained in the military camps of al-Shabab in Somalia.

The displayed fighters had made military maneuver as they were at Maslah camp today saying that they would redouble the fighting against the forces of the transitional government of Somalia and the African Union troops AMISOM.

Somalia: Uganda has already deployed another 750 peacekeepers of African Union (AU) in Somalia, another 250 will be deployed soon

Uganda has deployed an additional 750 peacekeepers in volatile Somalia out of the 2,000 troops, a figure that was agreed to by African Union (AU) to boost the 6,100 strong peacekeeping force in Somalia, a Ugandan army commander said on Wednesday.

Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, Commander of Land Forces of the Uganda People’s Defense Force, told reporters here, 40km south of the capital Kampala, that 750 troops were already deployed and another 250 will be deployed soon.

He said the deployment was in fulfillment of the country’s pledge following a decision by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in July this year.

Somalia: Al-Shabab receiving reinforcement for final attack to oust transitional Government and African Union peacekeepers

Al-Shabab Islamic Movement has announced “final massive” attacks against the transitional government and the AU peacekeepers in Mogadishu as “more militants” from southern and southwestern regions arrive in Mogadishu, reports privately-owned independent Radio Simba.

The additional forces meant to “reinforce al-Shabab fighters in Mogadishu arrived from Lower, Middle Shabeelle, Jubba, Bay and Bakool regions”.

Hisb al-Islam’s district commissioner in Buur Hakaba, southwestern Somalia, has said “many of his fighters left the district and have arrived in Mogadishu to reinforce their brothers fighting against the transitional government”.

Somalia: Clashes between al-Shabab islamist group and African Union kill 16 people, including 4 peacekeepers

At least 10 people died, including four African Union peacekeepers, in fighting in Somalia’s capital between forces loyal to the Western-backed government and al-Qaeda-linked Islamist rebels.

The AU troops died when a mortar hit the presidential palace in southern Mogadishu, Major Barigye Ba-Hoku, a spokesman for the continental body’s peacekeeping mission, said in a phone interview today from the city.

“We have lost four soldiers and eight others have sustained injuries,” Ba-Hoku said.

In the city’s central Bakara market, six people were killed near a jewelry kiosk, said Ali Muse Sheikh, a paramedic at Nationlink and Lifeline Africa.

Ethiopia: Ethiopian troops enter in Somalia

Ethiopian troops crossed the border and entered Somalia.

“Around 1,000 soldiers are heading in the direction of Beledehawa and Elwak,” a source in Dolo told Addis Neger online. Beledehawa and Elwak are towns along the Kenya-Somalia border.

According to the source, nearly 6,000 soldiers are also deployed on the border town of Dolo. Dolo is a town that border Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. The troops have reportedly been stationed in Dolo for the last three weeks.

Addis Neger analyst said that the objective of the move seems to divert the focus of the Islamic militant group, Al-Shabab, from Mogadishu, capital of Somalia. Al Shabab has a plan to control Mogadishu in the coming two days.

Somalia: 6th day fighting between government troops, African Union troops AMISOM and Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a against al-Shabab e Hizbul Islam kills 20 people, wounding 30 more others in Mogadishu

Heavy fighting between the troops of the transitional government of Somalia backing by the African Union troops AMISOM and allied fighters of Hizbul Islam and al-Shabab has broken out in parts of Hodan district in the Somali capital Mogadishu for the 6th consecutive day.

Most of the clashes continued between Dabka and Bakara intersections in Hodan district where both Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a clerics and the transitional government forces with AMISOM and al-Shabab forces that exchanged heavy gunfire which had affected parts of Bakara market in the capital, killing 20, wounding 30 others.

Most of the people died and wounded in parts of Hodan and Hawl-wadag districts in the capital according to the emergency traffic officials adding that there were more mortars using both sides.

Somalia: Fresh fighting erupts in Mogadishu between al-Shabab islamist militants and government troops caused the death of 6 civilians

Fresh fighting has erupted in the Somali capital between Islamist militants and government troops following Tuesday’s militant attack on a Mogadishu hotel that killed 31 people.

The French news agency reports at least six civilians were killed in the latest violence.

The al-Qaida linked al-Shabab insurgent group claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack on the Muna Hotel and said lawmakers staying there were the targets. Four members of the Somali parliament were killed.

The hotel is near the presidential palace in a small part of Mogadishu still under government control.

Somalia: Al-Qaeda fighters assaulted Hotel Mona in Mogadishu, 60 killed between them also six members of Parliament

Al-Shabab fighters shot dead 30 people, including six members of parliament, in a suicide attack on a Mogadishu hotel Tuesday, Somalia’s deputy prime minister said.

The two Islamist militants disguised as government security forces then blew themselves up to avoid arrest after the attack on the hotel, which was crowded with Somali officials.

“Thirty people died in this ambush. Six of them are members of the Somali parliament and four are Somali government civil servants,” Abdirahman Haji Adab Ibbi told reporters after the deadly rampage at Hotel Mona.

“The 20 others are innocent civilians who died in this horrible incident,” he added.
